Hardscaping Tutorial FAQ:
Removing joint fill can look like a daunting or messy task, but it's easier than you think. Using the Joint Cleaner or Joint Remover from Pave Tool Innovators allows you to remove paver joints in a time-effective manner and reduces the slurry mess you would get from a pressure washer.
Simply start off with your standard base that you would do under pavers, then you need to level up your setting bed. Using our Radius Screed rails, you can simply level the steel rails up and then screed the bedding layer. From there, just lay up the stone.
Geogrid is a great product mainly used for retaining walls, allowing greater stability behind the wall and preventing the wall from being pushed over from all the pressure behind it.
Block splitters are a necessity for splitting blocks or pavers. They allow you to get a concise cut with no dust. Check out our video on how to use a Block Splitter.
This can vary depending on the size of the project, but we would always recommend:
- Use a laser or digital altimeter to work at getting your material to the proper heights. Using our Grade Rake, it is simple to grade out the high spots and fill in the low spots.
- Screed the bedding layer with our Quick-E-Screeder Package. This allows you to sand up and get a perfect setting bed every time.
- On larger-scale projects, laser screeding is the way to go. Set up your laser with the proper slopes, and the Laser Screed PlanMatic attached to your machine does the rest. This Optimas machine can be used both for base material and screeding the bedding layer, getting it perfect every time.
The Zip Level Pro digital altimeter is a very simple tool mostly used for those who would go out to estimate a job, but can also be used in the field. Firstly, choose a centralized area, then pull out the measurement module and enough cord for the working area. Then zero out the altimeter at your “zero point” – any other point you set the measurement module to will give you a digital readout of the exact elevation difference from the “zero Point”.
Restraining your paver edge is a crucial step to finishing a paver job. Using our Hybrid Edging solution, you can be confident you will walk away with a solid edge every time - best of all, it’s simple to use. Make sure you pull the bedding material away so the edge restraint is established on a solid base. The good news is you can use the same edge restraint for both.
In a dense grade application where your base consists of hardpack gravel and meets the specs of ASTM D29-40, use standard 10” non-galvanized spikes and insert them into every third hole at opposing angles. The spikes can be pounded using a hammer or using a hammer drill with our Quick-E-Hammer for an easier and quicker install.
For an open grade base, aka ‘permeable base installation’ using ASTM spec #57 stone, we provide a special stake called our Hybrid Stake. This gets pounded in the v-shaped slots in the edging and restrains your edges even in the harshest conditions. The last step is to cover the edging with dirt and plant your grass!
Checking the accuracy of your level is crucial for ensuring precise measurements. To determine accuracy, follow our step-by-step process:
- Place the level on a flat surface and note the orientation and bubble reading.
- Rotate the level 180 degrees and place it on the same surface with the same orientation to compare the bubble reading.
- If the bubble reading is consistent in both positions, the level is accurate; otherwise, it may need adjustment or replacement.
- Consider using Pave Tools Quick-E-Levels for a reliable and adjustable option.
Pave Tool Innovator Product FAQ:
Landscaping is an overarching term that defines making a yard or other piece of land more attractive by altering the existing design. This fully encompasses hardscaping, which would focus on making the area more attractive and useful by using stone materials to create walls and walks, patios, and more.
Slabs are typically larger and thicker than pavers. They are often made of concrete or natural stone, while pavers can be made of various materials such as concrete, clay, or even rubber. Pavers are usually interlocking, allowing for flexible and customizable designs, while slabs are typically laid in a more uniform pattern. They can be easily replaced individually if damaged, whereas slabs may require the entire section to be replaced.
It is very important that on every retaining wall, you include a way to manage water. Oftentimes, this includes a footer drain behind the wall that is then piped out into the daylight to prevent any water build-up behind the wall.
Pave Tools’ products are created to ease the difficulty of installing hardscapes. Although our tools are created by a hardscaper for hardscapers, really anyone in the field, whether expert or DIYer, will find these tools useful and effective.
All hardscape projects start with a dream. Usually, this is the easy part! Then it moves to the design phase, where the dream gets laid out on paper. We would recommend reaching out to a hardscape specialist who can bring your dream to life.
Some essential hardscape tools or tools that are foundational are items like levels, screeder packages, paver lifters or slab lifters, and scribes. On top of this, you will need shovels, grade rakes, and even some large equipment for excavating soils.
Pave Tool Innovators offers Optimas equipment that specializes in “Pallet to Pavement Solutions.” This includes mechanical clamps as well as our vacuum technology, where we can easily lift large and heavy stones with two people or even rely on an excavator to move into place.
Applying an Edge Restraint is done directly after installation of pavers. Removal of the bedding layer, so the edging can be fastened directly to the base material is the first step. As simple as it sounds this is a crucial step. We recommend using the Quick-E-Sand Plow for removal of the bedding material without disturbing the base. Next step would be to lay the Quick-E-Hybrid HD Edging down on the base, then using a hammer like our Quick-E-Hammer with a hammer drill, simply fasten the edging. Lastly, take a shovel and cover the edge restraint with soil.
Pavers are ahead of its class compared to asphalt and concrete, pavers are not susceptible to cracking due to being a flexible system. Pavers typically last 20-25 years if maintained well before needing major repairs. With protectants that are able to be reapplied, pavers can last up to 50+ years.
Our most popular products are our Hybrid HD Edging, Vac max T-Handle Package, and our Screeder Package. But our #1 seller is still our Quick-E-Lifters - Pave Tools first product ever designed and built.
Retaining walls are structures designed to retain soil on a slope, therefore reducing erosion or even helping to maintain elevations to make space useful.
Hardscapes do require some maintenance, but a lot less than weekly lawn mows. One of the best ways to maintain your hardscapes is to protect them with breathable protectants, these are recommended to be applied every three years or so. Explore our collection of high-quality paver cleaners and protectants.
You should use Hybrid HD Edging. It is much more than a standard aluminum edging, and it is far superior to plastic edging. Hybrid HD Edging is the only edging on the market that allows you to apply in both a dense grade and open-graded base. It makes a positive connection to the earth and has proven its strength, durability, and resistance to freeze-thaw susceptible environments. This means driveway edging that allows grass to grow, does not pop up over time, and resists lateral shifting even with vehicular traffic.
Drainage on a patio has a lot of variables, if doing a permeable patio, you want the water to go down through the joints to soak into the subsoil and into the underground aquifer. If it is a standard patio, often the best way, if elevations permit, is to get the water to flow off the patio into the areas surrounding. There are often cases where neither of these are permitted, and channeling water into a drain is necessary. The Quick-E-Adjustable drain is the easiest drain on the planet to set in place and adjust perfectly, plus it looks great and is offered in a plastic or stainless top.
Retaining walls always require drainage, perforated pipe pitched to one location where it can then be day lighted out through the front of the wall is necessary. Another crucial requirement is that the water must be displaced by 8” from the base of the wall. This is to prevent saturation at the toe of the wall, which can lead to failures. Pave Tools Retaining Wall Spillway is the perfect build for this application and incorporates a built-in spillway, displacing the weeping water beyond the toe of the wall.
